FYI...wearing matching toe rings is a sign of marriage in India. Since I like toe rings, and I've had one since high school, I got some matching ones not long after we moved here. It's, of course, not necessary, but if you're going to wear them and you are married you need two--and two matching ones at that. Most all of the hindu ladies wear at least one set of matching toe rings. Some will have 3 sets--that is 6 toe rings! And, they are most often kind of big and gaudy with jewels and designs. I'm not kidding. I'll try to get a picture one day.
It's kind of like nose piercing--which SO many people do in India--it's not necessary, but if you're going to do it, you should do it on the correct side, according to the place you live.
There are actually 16 signs of marriage! I only wear toe rings. 16!!! Maybe I can tell you all about them one day in another post. The funny thing is my first couple of months here, I made the silly mistake of asking a lady if she was married! Hilarious. Couldn't I see all of her signs?????!!!!
And, that was your cultural lesson for the day. ;)
